45 Already Installed At Major Traffic Junctions, 100 More SoonMumbal: The Mumbai traffic police is all ready to make sure that once dangerous drivers are arrested, they would not find it easy to walk away after paying a fine in court due to lack of concrete evidence against them. The traffic police is going to instal 100 cameras across the city to catch offenders in the act and present the recording as legal evidence in court.JCP V Kamble said once magistrates are shown the CCTV recordings of those driving irresponsibly, they are sure to invoke section 184 of the MVA to send them to jail rather than letting them go lightly with a fine??We have powers under the Motor Vehicles Act (MVA) to send dangerous drivers to jail too,? said joint commissioner (traffic) Vijay Kamble. He added that at first when the drive against drunken drivers started, courts insisted that they be sent for blood tests before being handed a jail term. ??But later we convinced themagistrates that the printout given by an alcohol detector was good enough to prosecute the offenders,? Kamble said. In case of dangerous drivers, currently there is little that may stand up to scrutiny of courts except the word of the policemen who make the arrest. ??We already have around 45 cameras installed at important traffic junctions and there wifi be 100 more very soon,? said Kamble. He believed that once magistrates will be shown the CCTV recordings of those driving irresponsibly, they may invoke section 184 of the MVA to send them to jail rather than letting them go lightly with a fine. The traffic department has been consulting legal experts to come up with a sure strategy of convincing courts to hand out jail terms. ??My officers have learnt to argue the cases themselves in front of the magistrates,? Kamble said.Kamble also said that while until now those driving under the influence of alcohol had been sent to jail for only up to 20 days, repeat or habitual offenders may find themselves behind bars for six months. ??We are in the process of creating a comprehensive data bank so that police can keep track of dangerous drivers,? he said.Police records also show that 364 people have not responded to warrants served on them in the last few months for drunken and dangerous driving. ??Police teams are already going to their addresses to bring them to book,? Kamble said.
