Goa government, Cabinet Minister Babush Monserrate has been charged with abetment of rape. This happened after his 21-year-old son Rohit was charged with rape of a German girl, belonging a German family settled in Goa for the last 12 years. Girl's mother has also accused Babush's son of sending obscene text messages to her 14-year-old daughter.
For two weeks, the police did nothing. But then suddenly, the police claimed the content of the messages indicate Rohit was intimate with her and since she is a minor it constitutes rape.
And since the messages were sent from Monserrate's phone, he has been charged with abetment.
"How can text messages be used as evidence of rape? This is a political conspiracy," said Monserrate.
But the police action may have come because of an attack on Aires Rodrigues the lawyer and activist who was representing the German woman.
Rodrigues says two of his fingers were chopped by masked men who he claims were sent by Monserrate.
"We found that the messages were sent from Babush's phone. Babush knew that we were going to meet the SP to give more evidence in this case and the man in his frustration thought it is better to get rid of me," he said.
This latest scandal will not just impact Monserrate but coming close on the heels of the Scarlet Keeling case, only fuels the perception of Goa as a former paradise, now tainted by sleaze and scandal.
