Luck By Chance it seems item girls are gradually disappearing from Bollywood.
With mainstream actors doing special appearances in movies, will the term 'item girl' soon vanish from Bollywood's dictionary? Is it time for these girls to go 'job less'?
Are item girls here to stay? When dancers of the yore like Helen, Aruna Irani and Padma Khanna to name a few are still remembered for their dancing skills, can the latest item number names lose their sheen to the popular stars? Sophie Choudry, singer, actress and a popular stage performer tells, "I do not think that Bollywood celebrities have taken over the item number arena. Obviously, they are more popular, but item girls have always been a part of the industry and will always be. If you talk about yesteryears cinema, Helen's name is still venerated. Only a celebrity face can't make a song popular, it is the combination of music, performance, the way it's shot and promoted that makes a memorable scene."
Director Kunal Kohli retaliates, "Not the girls, but the tag 'item girl' should be completely banned. Media has given birth to this phrase and I really find it derogatory. The dancers can't be termed as an item, they are no objects after all. A song that is supposed to be a melody number can't be termed as a number. But if you talk about these dancing divas, they will continue to rock Bollywood for a long time."
