India's First Woman Indian Police Services : Kiran Bedi
INDIAS FIRST woman Indian Police Services (IPS) officer Kiran Bedi resigned from her job on Tuesday to fulfil her ??academic?? and ??spiritual?? interests. Bedi has opted for voluntary retirement 18 months before she would have officially retired but the Home Ministry hasn??t yet accepted her application.
??It??s good to retire while you are still needed,? Bedi said, allaying speculations linking her latest move with the recent disappointment over not being appointed Delhi??s commissioner. ??I live only in the present. Whatever happened, whatever I said, it??s behind me. A load Is off my shoulders now? Bedi said. Asked if she would now enter politics, Bedi said such speculation was hypothetical,
Her husband Brij Bedi said the KIRAN BEDI government forced her to take pre-mature retirement by denying her the commissioner??s post. ??It is a slur on the government??s face that a world-renowned police officer has chosen premature retirement,? he said.
A 1972 batch IPS officer, Kiran Bedi is the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development. She was due to retire in June 2009 but resigned 10 days ago.
Stressing that she needs time for social and academic work, Bedi said she was interested in teaching leadership and management skiils and a university outside Delhi has already offered her a job. ??My fifth book, on leadership, is also in the works and it requires time. I also need time to run my two NGOs,? she said.
