We all hope Ganesh Utsav without any fear this year, our city which had recovered from the shock of a possible wave of communal disharmony, threats, flu's has shed all its apprehensions and has got its act together to celebrate the
Ganesha Chathurthi meaningfully and without any fear.
What I think is Ganapati celebrations in our Mumbai is going to get bigger this year, the recession and swine flu scare notwithstanding. With over 50,000 pandals, as against a mere 25,000 last year, lavish settings, off-beat idols and more elaborate 'pujas', the 10 day long festival is sure to brighten up the city and lift the spirits of denizens.
Ganesha Chaturthi also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesha Festival is a day on which Lord Ganesha, brother of Lord Muruga, the son of Shiva and Parvati is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees on this day. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi in Sanskrit and Chavath in Konkani and Chathaa in Nepali.
Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated for the reason as it is the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). Typically, the day usually falls anywhere between 20 August and 15 September. The festival lasts for more than 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi day. This festival is observed in the lunar month of bhadrapada shukla paksha chathurthi madhyahana vyapini purvaviddha. If Chaturthi prevails on both days (two days), the first day should be observed. Even if chaturthi prevails for complete duration of madhyahana on the second day, but if it prevails on previous day's madhyahana period even for one ghatika (24 minutes) the previous day should be observed.
Ganesha, the elephant-headed GOD - son of Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshipped in India & throughout the world as the Supreme God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune.
