MNS attacked railway board examination centres

October 20, 2008 11:24:09

In the wake of attacks on north Indian candidates appearing in the railway recruitment exam in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said his government will not tolerate the 'gundagiri' of MNS.

"I have directed police commissioners in Mumbai and Thane to deal sternly with those taking law into their hands," he said, adding his government will not "tolerate MNS' 'gundagiri'."

Activists of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) attacked 13 railway board examination centres in suburban Mumbai protesting "inadequate representation" to locals.

Speaking at a flag-off function of direct train service between his hometown Latur and Mumbai, Deshmukh said his government would have provided "full security" at the examination centres had the Railway Board given prior intimation about the tests.

"We would have provided full security if the Board had told us earlier about the exams," Deshmukh said.

About 10 MNS activists have been arrested from central suburban Dombivali and Kalyan so far for disrupting the exam and preventing candidates from appearing in the test, police said.

Meanwhile, speaking at a function in Ahmednagar district, Raj justified the agitation against north Indians and blamed the Railways for publishing the examination advertisements in newspapers which are not normally accessible to Marathi candidates.
