Mumbai Police are "shocked" that US national Kenneth Haywood, whose computer was allegedly hacked to send the July 26 Ahmedabad terror email, managed to leave India with his wife and two daughters, despite a look-out notice for him at all Indian airports.
Immigration officer posted at Delhi's international airport has been taken off the desk on the basis of a preliminary inquiry. A senior member of the Bureau of Immigration (BOI) confirmed that "Haywood was allowed to go by immigration officials at Indira Gandhi International Airport". More would be known after a detailed inquiry, he added.
The family's passports had not been seized or impounded by the police and Haywood, employed as general manager with the US company Campbell White, had offered full cooperation to the investigating agencies.
His smooth passage has raised worrying questions as to how a person named in such a sensitive terror investigation was allowed to leave India. A terror message was sent from Haywood's email five minutes before serial blasts ripped through Ahmedabad on July 26, killing almost 60 people.
The Home Ministry has asked for a report on how American national Kenneth Haywood was able to leave India despite a lookout notice against him.
The initial reports suggest that it was a human error. The Anti-Terrorist Squad had questioned Haywood and conducted a lie-detector test on him in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts.
But Haywood left India on the intervening night of August 16-17, that is even before the results of the lie-detector test was out.
