Sri Lankan cricket team playing in Pakistan is attacked on cricket ground recently, about dozen masked gunmen armed with rifles and rocket launchers attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team wounding several players and killing five police.
The assailants ambushed the team's convoy at a traffic circle close to the main sports stadium in the eastern city of Lahore ahead of a match against Pakistan's national team, triggering a 15-minute gunbattle with police guarding the vehicles.
The Sri Lankan players and officials have been airlifted from the by a Pakistan airforce helicopter to facilitate their return to Colombo at the earliest.
"The helicopter will take them straight to the Lahore airport from where they will fly home this afternoon," a Pakistan Cricket Board official said.
Injured player, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavithana, who were hit by gunshots, will be taken to the airport straight from the hospital.
Six Sri Lankan cricketers were injured and five of their bodyguards killed in the first ever deadly terrorist ambush in the history of the sport, forcing Colombo to immediately call off the tour.
PCB chairman Ejaz Butt and other Board officials were present at the Gaddafi stadium ground from where the helicopter airlifted the players and officials.
