Todays Teenagers in Depression
"What is wrong with the teenagers nowadays?" is the question that has been troubling parents and teachers.
Are the teenagers in the wrong, or is it
the parents and teachers who bring them up
and tutor them, who should shoulder the
blame for their abnormal behaviour?
Teenagers, by nature, are known to be
moody and indiscreet. This is because of
the raging hormones, which make the
teenager emotionally weak and volatile. A
teenager also undergoes a lot of brain maturation, which is unfortunately lopsided.
Areas of the brain responsible for risktaking often mature ahead of
areas responsible for rational thinking and logic. As a result,
teenagers are often impulsive, and lack
foresight. Peer pressure is another reason
why teens get swayed one way or the other.
It is also a known scientific fact that
someone who commits suicide is someone
who has been suffering from depression to
an extent. In depression, certain chemicals
and neurotransmitters in the brain are
low, and this often leads to negative thinking and thoughts of self-mutilation and
self-damage.
But depression has many symptoms, notable among them being crying,
social withdrawal, a lack of interest in personal
grooming, falling academic grades, indications of drug or alcohol
abuse, self criticism, lack of sleep, and a feeling of hopelessness and
futility.
If parents find any of the above symptoms in their teenagers, it is worth to consult your doctor, to rule out any problems.
Teenage stresses and tensions are on the
rise, thanks to a combination of pressure
from parents, educational demands, ex
tracurricular activities, the media, rapidly
changing environment, peer pressure and
increased affluence.
Parents today often expect their children
to be super-achievers, not only academically, but in other fields too.
Constant comparison with other children is the name of the
game. Easy access to mobile phones, the Internet, credit cards, plenty
of pocket money,
technical gizmos, and automobiles - all
these soon induce a sense of déjà vu in the teenager, who then craves
for more excitement, which often comes from illegal or violent means.
It is high time parents woke up and tuned
in to their children, spend more time in trying to understand them, their uniqueness,
their aptitudes, their likes and dislikes, and
their aspirations and anxieties, before more
innocent children lose their lives, for no
real fault of theirs.
