Both studies were reported by WebMD, and presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine, and provide a great deal of helpful information to those in the Los Angeles podiatry field.
Lalitha Balasubramanian is a high-heel researcher, and says that several studies have shown that just walking down the street in heels can lead to everything from blisters and bunions to backaches and sprained ankles. In unique study, Balasubramanian and colleagues from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston observed the motion of the ankle joint in 11 college-aged women went down some stairs.
Normally, when walking down stairs, you put your heel down first and then flatten the foot. Then you use your toe to propel yourself forward. Wearing heels, however, most women took on an unsteady gait. They would put more force on their toe than their heel in landing and moving forward. Unsteady gait can lead to excessive lower leg muscle activity, which is a common precursor of a Los Angeles foot injury.
On the other side of the coin, as comfy as they may be, flip-flops may also lead to abnormal changes in your stride, other researchers say. Justin F. Shroyer, a graduate student at Auburn University in Alabama, and colleagues studied 39 men and women aged 19 to 25. In this study, Shroyer and colleagues found that participants struck the ground with less force while wearing flip flops, compared to wearing sneakers. Because of the lack of support and decreased force, it is no wonder that often people, who wear flip-flops for extensive amounts of time, alter their normal gait and experience lower leg pain.
A Los Angeles foot doctor might suggest ditching both heels and flip-flops and invest in a good comfortable running shoe instead. Although, wearing high heels and flip flops should be fine if they fit properly and are worn less often than normal shoes.
